How the electricity market works?
The electricity market for corporate users in Latvia has been open already since 2007. The main purpose of opening the market is to create competition in as many stages of electricity supply as possible. However, due to technical and economic reasons, competition is not possible in all stages of the supply chain; therefore, some functions are still regulated even after the opening of the electricity market.
The market opening means that electricity can be purchased from a freely chosen electricity trader. Just as in any other market, you can purchase electricity from the trader who offers the most suitable services and the most adequate price. Regardless of which trader is selected, the electricity transmission system operator (Augstsprieguma tīkls AS) and distribution system operator (Sadales tīkls AS) continue to ensure the physical supply of electricity, which is regulated by the State.
