Celebration that takes care of the planet – how to celebrate in an eco-friendly way!

10 December 2024

The festive season is not only a great opportunity to share moments with loved ones but also a wonderful reason to consider how to reduce the environmental impact of festivities. In this article, we share practical tips from the experts of the Energy Efficiency Centre to help you celebrate the festive season in an energy-efficient way.

1. Informed choice of gifts

Choose gifts that promote sustainability, for instance, products made from recycled materials, or offer experiences such as concert, theatre and exhibition tickets, thus reducing the consumption of new resources and waste.

2. Energy-efficient lighting

Festive lighting is an essential element of festive decorations. By choosing LED lighting, you will not only create a wonderful atmosphere but also reduce your electricity consumption. LED bulbs consume up to 80% less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs.

3. Safe and efficient use of fairy lights

Before installing the fairy lights, check whether there is any visible damage in the power supply unit and wires, for example, whether the sheaths of the wires are cracked, melted, or broken. When decorating the Christmas tree, place the strings in a way that prevents damage by a candle or the flames of a sparkler. When decorating the exterior of your home or an outdoor Christmas tree, make sure that the string packaging shows the alphanumeric combination IP44, indicating that it is resistant to moisture and changes in weather conditions but is not intended to be immersed in water. Meanwhile, the IP67 rating on the string means that it is water and moisture-resistant.

4. Using energy-efficient solutions in your home

Various electrical appliances are often used during the festive season. Use smart thermostats and time switches to ensure that the heating and lighting only work when you need them to ensure efficient energy consumption.

5. Choice of environmentally friendly transport

If you are planning to attend festive events or pay a visit to someone, we recommend that you choose the most environmentally friendly means of transport, such as public transport or a carpooling option (using the same vehicle for the transportation of several people). This will help reduce overall CO2 emissions and promote sustainable lifestyles.

6. Awareness when using electrical appliances

Unplug electrical appliances when they are not in use. This simple action can significantly reduce your energy consumption and is especially useful during the festive season when multiple different devices are in use. This will enable you to save up to 10% of your home’s total electricity consumption.

Following these energy efficiency tips will not only make your festive celebrations more glamorous but also more environmentally friendly. In this way, you can enjoy a wonderful holiday while also caring for the future of our planet. Have a warm, bright and responsible holiday!
