Tariffs of Distribution Services

As of 1 August 2016 the new tariffs of the distribution system services, which are formed by the payment for the supply of electricity and the payment for the provision with a connection, came into force.

Please read the following information about the distribution service tariff change.

Tariffs of Distribution Services

What composes the total payment for electricity?

The payment for electricity consists of three parts:

  • Services of distribution system — provision with an electrical power connection, continuous electrical power supply and the maintenance of electrical meters, which is performed by Sadales tīkls AS.
  • Electricity price — includes the generation and supply costs. This is a part that changes, depending on the chosen electricity supplier.
  • Mandatory procurement components (MPC) — state provided support to environmentally friendly electricity generation. MPC is paid by entirely all users in Latvia, thus supporting environmentally friendly producers and types of electricity— green energy and cogeneration.

The state determined value added tax also applies to the payment.

The payment part that is affected by tariff changes is the services of the distribution system.

Why are the tariffs being balanced?

Sadales tīkls AS renders its services to all clients — both to those who consume electricity on a daily basis and the clients to whom electricity is supplied but is not consumed on a daily basis. The tariff balance provides for the inclusion of a fixed charge for the electricity connection, which can be regarded as a subscription fee, in the total payment for electricity further on. Thus the clients will receive electricity but Sadales tīkls AS, for its part, will be able to provide qualitative services of the distribution system in long term.

What are the changes in the payment?

The changes in your payment were depend on:

  • monthly electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh);
  • the number of phases in your household (the majority of flats have a 1-phase connection, private houses — a 3-phase connection); if you have a 3-phase connection:

       -- the current intensity in ampere (A);

       -- whether your electrical meter separately measures the consumption in day-time and at night.

You can find this information about each object in the section My Contracts under the headword “objects” in the authorised part of the portal, or in the Elektrum mobile application. You can also find the information in your contract.

The infographic below shows how the payment for distribution services changed.

Example how to calculate the monthly payment for distribution services:

  • If your household has a 1-phase connection and the average monthly consumption amounts to 100 kWh, your Sadales tīkls AS tariff is S1.The monthly payment for the services of the distribution system is:

100 kWh x 0.05334 + 1.50 = 6.83 EUR (with VAT)

  • If your household has a 3-phase connection, the current intensity of the entry protection device is 20 A, the electrical meter does not measure the consumption separately in the day-time and at night, and the average monthly consumption amounts to 100 kWh, and your Sadales tīkls AS tariff is S2. The monthly payment for the services of the distribution system is:

100 kWh x 0.05334 + 20 A x 0.242 = 10.17 EUR (with VAT)

Why has my payment for electricity changed and is it possible to reduce the costs?

Your payment for electricity has changed if the load in your household is not used to the utmost. You have a possibility to reduce the current intensity of entry protection and thus avoid the overpayment for inefficiently used load. Check whether the present load is appropriate to your household! In order to do it, carefully evaluate the quantity of the currently used electrical devices and the potential simultaneous load.

The load calculator is an informative tool developed by Sadales tīkls AS, which will help to determine – how much load approximately is required for the use of your indicated electrical devices. By determining the most appropriate type of connection for your household, you can understand, whether you don’t overpay for inefficiently used load.

After entering in the calculator the area of your household, the number of phases and electric devices used, it will recommend, how much load is required for using your indicated electrical devices simultaneously.

If the load in your household differs from the load recommended by the calculator, you can make load changes by completing a request here or on the website of Sadales tīkls AS.

However, before you take a decision on the changes in load, we recommend you to consult with certified electrical specialists or companies that provide the services of such kind, because calculations are informative.

When did my payment change and where can I see the changes?

  • If your selected method of payment is Bill , we invoiced the first payment according to the new tariffs in September, for the electricity consumed in August. You can see the changes in the “Transmission and Distribution Services” column.

  • If your method of payment is Balanced Payment, your payment changed or will change as of the moment of recalculation. In September, we carried out recalculation for customers, who were significantly influenced by the changes in distribution service tariffs of monthly payments. If you have not received a letter with a recalculated monthly payment amount, please continue to pay the previous monthly payment amount.

When receiving a letter with the new Balanced Payment amount, you can see the distribution system service fee calculated for you in the “Transmission and Distribution Services” column. To learn more about the recalculation of  Balanced Payment please read this

At any time, you can check the total amount of payment for electricity in the authorised part of the portal, section My Payments.

In order to compare the previous amount of payment for electricity with the new amount after the changes in the distribution service tariffs, we invite you to use the Tariff Comparison Calculator. Please note – you can use the calculator to calculate the changes in the total monthly payment amount, not the changes in the payment for distribution service tariffs!
