How to take care of electrical appliances?

15 May 2018

There is no doubt that one of the most important helpers in cleaning your home is the vacuum cleaner. In order for it to be able to efficiently collect dust, taking care of the device itself is indispensable. Similarly, to make sure that the washing machine can wash laundry thoroughly and the dishwasher can clean the dusty lamp shades, it is necessary to maintain the devices clean. We encourage you to take into consideration the recommendations summarised here to ensure high-quality and energy-efficient operation of electrical appliances!

Vacuum cleaner

  • To ensure maximum suction power and prevent dust particles from returning to your home, it is recommended to empty the dust bag or container immediately after the indicator lights up or if suction power is reduced.
  • The vacuum cleaner filter takes care of minimising the amount of dust returning to the room; therefore, remember to clean or replace the filter regularly, approximately once every six months. The recommended filter replacement frequency is specified in the user’s manual of the device.

Washing machine

  • Each time after removing the laundry, it is advisable to leave the door of the washing machine open and wipe the rubber seal around it to prevent unpleasant smells.
  • From time to time, it is recommended to clean the detergent drawer and its compartment and also remove the dirt accumulated in the washing machine filter. To do this correctly, see the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
  • It is also advisable to remove the lime scale build-up in the washtub. This can be done in an environmentally friendly way: pour two sachets of citric acid into the washtub and switch on the device at the highest water temperature (90 °C). At the end of the cycle, it is recommended to rinse the tub again by turning on the rinse mode.

Dishwasher

  • To prevent unpleasant smells in the dishwasher, the doors of the device should be left open every time after removing the dishes.
  • It is advisable to clean the dishwasher filter under the running water after every few times of dishwashing, as it tends to accumulate food residue. See the user’s manual of the device for instructions on how to do this.
  • It is recommended to clean the dishwasher spray arms from time to time, as they may get clogged with food particles. A bristle brush can be helpful for this process.
  • To remove lime scale, citric acid can be used: pour two sachets of citric acid into the liquid detergent compartment and switch on the device in standard mode. At the end of the cycle, it is recommended to rinse the device again.

Exhaust hood

  • When the exhausthood is covered in grease deposits, its performance decreases significantly.
  • If the exhausthood filter is cleaned regularly, it can be easily cleaned by hot, running water or by soaking it in water.
  • If it is difficult to clean the exhausthood filter, make a paste by mixing the baking soda with water. Apply the paste to stains, allow it to set for half an hour or longer, if necessary, and then clean it with a damp cloth.
  • The exhausthood filter can also be washed in the dishwasher by adding the same detergent as used for the dishes.

Electric kettle

  • To prevent increased consumption of electricity for boiling water, lime scale should be removed from the heating element of the electric kettle on a regular basis.
  • Removing the lime scale can be done in an environmentally friendly way using citric acid. Pour the citric acid into the kettle and add the maximum permissible amount of water. Bring it to the boil, wait a little until the lime scale build-up breaks down and pour the water out. Then, bring clean water to the boil again and pour it out.

Electric tank water heater

  • If there is lime scale build-up on the heating element of the electric tank water heater or boiler, the power consumption of the device will increase significantly.
  • It is recommended to carry out technical maintenance of the boiler at least once a year: clean its heating element, check the condition of the anode rod and thoroughly rinse the inside of the boiler. If you know how to do it, carry out the maintenance on your own. If not, it is better to invite a knowledgeable technician.
