Safe and economic driving recommendations

29 August 2020

Before you drive

  • Assess the most frequently used routes, maybe there is some other route with less dense traffic.
  • Plan your driving routes and charging places choosing to do several things or several works in one trip. To the extent possible, plan your driving time a route to avoid traffic jams as much as possible.
  • Keep your luggage or cargo compartment clean and empty as much as possible. Big cargo increases electricity consumption.
  • Make sure that there is optimal air pressure in tyres of your electric car. You can find recommended tyre pressure figures in your electric car service manual, as well as in the front door opening or on the door of your electric car.
  • Clean frozen snow and ice from wheel arches and disks, clean your windshield and other windows, if necessary.
  • Open windows first to quickly cool the interior of your electric car, when you get in. When you activate an air conditioner or climate control in your electric car, close your windows and sunroof not to increase electricity consumption. Deactivate the devices, if you don’t need them. Use climate control in automatic mode, adapting the temperature gradually. To check the impact of climate control on distance being covered, you can turn it off for a moment and evaluate its impact on the distance being covered. Sometimes it is so negligible (usually in case of air conditioning) that refusing it is not worth it.
  • While your electric car is connected to the charging equipment, disable climate control for heating or cooling of the car interior until your drive, thus not consuming battery electricity and increasing the distance to be covered.
  • If you plan charging during your trip, plan the charging place in such a way that:
  1. the battery charge level at the beginning of charging is low (20~40%), thus getting quicker charging speed and reducing your journey time;
  2. there is still a reserve (30-60 km) if the planned charging place is occupied or is not operational, thus ensuring an opportunity to get to the next charging station on your route.
  • If possible, in cold weather plan to start charging your electric car a few hours before you are going to drive and complete charging shortly before you drive. The battery becomes slightly warmer while being charged, and a warmer battery increases the distance to be covered.

While driving

  • When your start driving, reach the preferable driving speed by gradual acceleration, maintain it while driving, avoid rapid changes in speed and complete stops. Choose your preferable speed in accordance with Traffic regulations, road condition and traffic flow intensity.
  • Keep about 3 second distance from the vehicle driving in front of you. This increases your chances to react to changes in traffic.
  • Evaluate the situation on the road as far as you can, and foresee potential changes in traffic flow, traffic lights, action of drivers of other vehicles, thus avoiding unnecessary maneuverers, unnecessary braking and increasing safety on the road.
  • As you drive, pay attention to road pavement – in autumn when leaves have fallen and in winter when road pavement may be slippery. Also pay attention when your drive on cobblestones and tram rails, as well as places, where road pavement changes.
  • During night hours, when driving through woody areas, be cautious, look at the road and its sides, slopes, animals are most active during these hours and may unexpectedly cross the road. Use high beam as much as possible to illuminate more road.
  • On the road, where stones raise from the ground (road repairs, unsurfaced roads and so on), pay attention to vehicles driving towards you. Reduce speed, if necessary and keep closer to the right side of the road.
  • Remember, you must always give way to the tram, consider the location of tram rails and your electric car on the carriageway.
  • Do not use your smartphone, when driving, use the hands free system to talk over the phone. Plan longer phone conversations, when you are not moving.
  • Also use the public transport lane while driving, but remember that you must give way to public transport, as well as drivers of other vehicles may not know that electric cars may use this lane.
  • Keep track of the distance expected to be covered by your electric car, but remember that the forecast is usually based on average consumption during your last trip. If your make the remaining route with higher speed or road pavement changes, or you drive up the hill, your consumption will increase, but the distance will reduce.
  • Trust the distance expected to be covered by your electric car, but remember that the forecast is based on consumption during your last trip (about 10 – 20 minutes). If your make the remaining route with higher speed or road pavement changes (gravel road, road covered with snow), or you drive up the hill, your consumption will increase, but the distance will reduce.
  • Use the distance (in kilometres) shown by navigation to the destination, comparing it to the shown distance to be covered by the electric car. If the distance that can be covered by the electric car is shorter than the one shown by navigation, reduce your driving speed, disable unnecessary electricity consumers. However, we recommend to plan at least 5 km reserve to the next charging station.
  • Keep track of your charging speed, when charging. In most electric cars, charging speed reduces after 70~80% charging level has been reached. Your route may sometimes be covered faster using several short charges (charging your battery to ~60%, when charging is the quickest) than by charging more than 80%, when charging speed is usually slower.
  • Use the Eco driving mode, when driving, it will increase the distance that can be covered;
  • Use regenerative braking mode during your trip – in this way energy generated while braking gets back to the battery and increases the distance that can be covered;
  • Do not exceed the permitted driving speed. Your trip will be most efficient, if you fit perfectly in the traffic flow, using the cover provided by other vehicles and keeping safe distance.
  • Fitting into the traffic flow will be more efficient
  • Fit into the traffic flow.
  • Do not drive more than 2 hours without stopping. If your trip is longer than 2 hours, you need a 15 minute rest, when it is recommended to charge your electric car.

After driving

  • Follow stopping and parking instructions and signs on road pavement. When parking your electric car, keep sufficient distance from nearby vehicles.
  • When parking, see that there are no obstacles, posts and similar objects. If you are unsure, don’t be shy, get out of your electric car and see how far the obstacle or object, which you can drive on or touch, is.
  • Park your electric car so that it does not inconvenience other traffic participants.
  • When driving in or out of your garage or open gates, make sure that they are stable and will not damage your electric vehicle in case of sudden wind.
  • Do not leave your electric car battery without charge (less than 20%) for a long period of time.
