Elektrum Drive will develop the largest high-capacity charging network in the Baltics
As part of the largest high-capacity charging network in the Baltic states, Elektrum Drive will build a total of 216 charging points at 55 stations on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T network) by 2026 with the support of EUR 5 500 000 from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
Elektrum Drive, the leading operator of electric vehicle charging networks in the Baltic states, is planning to create the largest high-capacity charging network in the Baltic region, available for both light and heavy-duty electric vehicles. Elektrum Drive will build a network of charging stations in Latvia and Estonia with CEF funding, with 216 charging points at 55 stations by 2026.
On TEN-T roads, the scale of the future network is characterised by the provision of 150–300 kW charging speed at 212 charging points at 53 stations, including ultra-fast 350–400 kW charge power at 4 ports at 2 charging stations. There will be 25 stations in Latvia and 30 in Estonia. A 300 kW charge means that one electric car can be charged in 10 minutes for a 250 km journey.
“This is Latvenergo Group’s first cross-border electromobility project with EU co-funding. In addition to Latvia and Estonia, there are plans to further expand the fast charging station network in Lithuania, strengthening Elektrum Drive’s ambition to be the leading EV charging provider in all the Baltic states. This year, our objective is to reach the target of more than 800 installed ports in the domestic market. To achieve this, we are expanding our team and expertise rapidly, working actively with partners in all Baltic countries. Also, in the field of electric car charging, there is currently competition between different operators, and I am pleased to say that the implementation of this project confirms Elektrum Drive’s leadership in the areas of quality and competence,” says Ansis Valdovskis, Director of Baltic Electric Vehicle Charging, Latvenergo AS.
The aim of the project, co-funded by the European Union, is to provide reliable and publicly accessible charging infrastructure on the TEN-T road networks in Latvia and Estonia. The project implementation period is from 2023 to 2026. The total EU funding amounts to EUR 5 500 000, of which EUR 2 800 000 will be used for project activities in Latvia and EUR 2 700 000 in Estonia.
TEN-T, or the trans-European transport network, is a single network of rail, inland waterway, road, maritime, air and multimodal transport infrastructure in the European Union to strengthen the single market, ensure the smooth flow of goods and people, and boost EU competitiveness. The project is a part of the Elektrum Drive Baltic Charging Network Development Plan, which provides for the installation of 1200 charging ports available for public charging by 2026 and 3000 by 2030.
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key European Union financing instrument for the implementation of Europe’s infrastructure and the Green Deal, which contributes to the EU’s decarbonisation targets for 2030 and 2050. The CEF programme supports the development of sustainable and efficiently interconnected European networks in energy, transport and digital services.
The objective of Elektrum Drive is not only to help maintain Latvia’s reputation as the leading electric car charging location in the Baltics but also to further expand our infrastructure in all three Baltic states and perhaps beyond. This includes the EU’s major TEN-T road network, which is designed to be 100% green energy-based. The Group is also moving towards one of its goals – to make a significant contribution to the company’s, national and European sustainability by preventing hundreds of tonnes of CO2 from entering the environment every year. By contributing to the European Green Deal, only green energy will be used in the project, with a green energy certificate confirming its origin.
The Elektrum Drive charging network is available in the largest cities of the Baltics, and it provides safe movement opportunities throughout the region without worrying about the next nearest charging point. You can charge not only on the Elektrum Drive charging network but also at chargers set up by partners using the Elektrum Drive mobile app, which offers both immediate and post-paid payment options.
